| A tour to learn in detail about the glorious past of Okinawa would definitely
start at the magnificent fire-red Shurijo Castle in Naha City. The castle features
a myriad of cultural treasures and heritages that remain to this very day.
Nestled around the castle are two heritage sites, the Tamaudun Royal Mausoleum
and Sonohyan-utaki Shrine, along with the famous Shureimon
Gate. On this gate is a plaque, on which is inscribed the words Shurei-no-kuni,
literally "Ryukyu is a country respecting propriety." An illustration
of this gate can now be seen on the 2,000-yen bill issued in the year 2000 as
a commemorative bill. A short walk around the park will take you to Enkakuji Temple,
a temple for the royal family during the second Sho dynasty, and Bezaitendo Shrine,
which enshrines Benzaiten, the water goddess who oversaw safe voyages. Nearby
you will find the artificial Ryutan Lake where boating banquets for Chinese investiture
envoy were once held.
Complete your tour by visiting the king's second residence, Shikina-En gardens,
located a mere 1.5 kilometers away. Walk the grounds and you will see a gorgeous
landscape of pavilions and bridges in harmony with nature. This beautiful site
is now an extremely popular place for couples who come from everywhere, wishing
to wed in traditional Ryukyuan setting and attire.
