| Several historical sites related to the creation of the islands and to
the Ryukyu Kingdom exist in the southern area of Okinawa. Your tour can start
at Sefa-utaki, a sacred area in Chinen Village that appears in myths and in the
kingdom's history. At this tranquil and divine site you will find paths leading
you to several ceremonial altars in the midst of trees and stones.
In Tamagusuku Village, one can also drive along a tour route known as Gusuku
Road. The route will take you to four legendary castle ruins that display well-preserved
Gusuku structures. Another site in this area is the Ukinju Hainju,
a natural spring associated with a myth describing the origin of grains harvested
in Okinawa.
Also located in the south are specialty restaurants, gardens and cafes serving
herbal teas, fresh fruit juice, healthy Okinawan food and much more. These facilities
are gaining popularity in Japanese guidebooks. Don't forget to consult your map
or guidebook for refreshments when driving around in the south!
