So many ways to have fun in the water!
Okinawa's beaches are mostly sandy and gently sloping, with shallow water close to shore, calm and easy beaches just right for small children to play at. Coral reefs break the force of heavy seas, working to moderate even typhoon-strength waves and tsunami, playing a big role in keeping the islands safe. However, surfers need waves, so they go to certain points that suit their needs.
There are various types of beaches. Most beaches run by resort hotels or cities and towns have showers and toilets, and usually food stalls or shops nearby. Other beaches are good for beach parties, camping or fishing. With these many beaches, you’ll sure to find the perfect beach that matches your purpose.
Beach parties are probably the favorite beach activity for locals. On days off, people like to get together with family, relatives, friends or workmates, have a barbecue and relax. At beaches managed by cities and towns, such as Azama Sun-sun Beach and Mibaru Beach in southern Okinawa Island or Chatan Town’s Sunset Beach and Ginowan City’s Tropical Beach, you can rent barbecue grills and tents for beach parties and even pre-order food and have it waiting for you, ready to cook.
The pool season in Okinawa is during the summer. Okinawa Prefecture Comprehensive Park in Okinawa City has a flowing water pool and a water slide. Three leisure pools are installed at the Nishizaki Comprehensive Park in Itoman City. Wel Sunpia Okinawa, a public lodging facility in Sashiki Town, also has a leisure pool. The Sunset Mihama National Health Insurance Wellness Center in Chatan Town comes with a leisure pool with a water slide.
