May 27, 2009 A festival of gallant seamen who honor and respect tradition.

The Itoman dragon-boat race is Itoman City's major event, a festival to appreciate the sea for its blessings and pray for the safety and success of Uminchu (fishermen). Every year on May 4 of the lunar calendar, teams from 3 settlements race in small boats that are called Sabani, and the winner of the race is said to be promised a bumper year. The event starts off with Ugan Haarii (boat race of prayer), Itoman's own capsizing race, and the highlight Agaisubu race. Even though it is held on a weekday, the event draws a huge crowd from within and out of the prefecture and they cheer on the brave and tough seamen.
