| Sanshin (3-string lute) is an Okinawan string instrument. March 4th was officially designated as the day of sanshin in 1993, to give greater exposure to this important Okinawan heritage. On this day, at the strike of noon, People all over Okinawa perform Kagiyadefu (Okinawan dance, with sanshin accompaniment) whether it be at community centers, homes, workplaces, or schools. Yomitan Village cultural center is the main venue, and the place would become packed with sanshin players and fans as performance of folk music, classical and contemporary, continues on into the night. |
